BookBurn Cafe and Social, a cafe and bar/lounge located in Orlando’s Milk District, officially opened its doors on January 31, welcoming a crowd that exceeded anticipated attendance numbers. The grand opening marked a significant milestone for the community-driven concept, establishing BookBurn as both a cultural sanctuary and a vibrant gathering space rooted in resistance, artistry, and radical hospitality.
Founded by Filipino gay activist Jonny Cruz, BookBurn Café and Social was developed as a response to the increasing book bans due to our current legislature, and the silencing of queer and marginalized voices across Florida and the nation. The concept incorporates mental health advocacy, survivor-centered programming, and partnerships designed to support individuals navigating depression, anxiety, trauma, and domestic violence.
Located at 2425 E South St, Orlando, FL 32803, BookBurn Café and Social launched with a clear mission: People cannot be erased. Voices will not be silenced. The opening night brought together performers, artists, authors, activists, community leaders, and neighbors who gathered to celebrate literature, identity, and visibility in a standing-room-only atmosphere.
The space debuted with a curated collection of banned books and LGBTQ+/BIPOC publications, highlighting Filipino, Black, Brown, and queer creativity. Guests enjoyed a full-service bar program featuring 16 rotating draft selections, including two of the top beers from the Philippines, complemented by wine, handcrafted mocktails, and celebratory champagne.
Since the grand opening, BookBurn Café and Social has expanded its offerings. Coffee service is now live starting at 6PM daily, and a menu of small bites has been introduced, further enhancing the cafe’s vision of community gathering.
BookBurn Café and Social now operates as a living archive and gathering place where culture, activism, and artistry converge, reinforcing its commitment to preserving banned literature, amplifying marginalized creators, and fostering solidarity across communities.
